What are the options for water filtration?
What is the best way to filter your water?
With people being more conscious than ever of the quality of water we are drinking, buying or installing some kind of water filter in your home has become more common.
So what are the most common options for Christchurch residents?
1. Water Filter Jugs
The simplest and cheapest option (other than nothing at all) is to buy a Water Filter Jug with a changeable filter in the lid. These can be bought for $30 – $40 and the filters are about $25 for a pack of two. Easily found in supermarkets and places like Briscoes and K-mart.
They are easy to use – just remember to keep them filled and in the fridge and you have drinking water ready to go.
Swap out the filters regularly to make sure your water is as pure as you want it to be.
2. Plumbed in Fridge Water Filters
We are seeing an increasing number of customers buying fridges with a water dispenser in the fridge door, plumbed into your water supply and with an internal filter cartridge.
This gives you a larger supply of cold water at a time (rather than just one jug full), but again you need to make sure your filter cartridge is swapped out regularly. We are happy to plumb your fridge in if you are considering buying one of these for your kitchen.
3. Underbench Kitchen Water Filters
These need to be installed by a plumber and have a cartridge that is located under your sink.
They require an additional slimline tap to be installed next to your main kitchen taps, and the filter tap is normally just used for drinking water – unless of course you need it for other purposes as well. However it is not connected to your hot water supply.
Once again, as with all filtration systems, you need to change out the filters regularly.
4. Whole Home Water Filtration Systems
We frequently install these into new build homes or renovations we work on, and although the cost is higher, the primary benefit is that all of the water in your home is going through the filter cartridges. In some cases the filtration system also has UV built in, for a further level of protection – particularly helpful if you are on tank water or rural supply.
So you can be confident that every tap in your house, including your shower, your laundry and the bathtub is chlorine free, which can be a particular benefit for anyone who is sensitive to chlorine and has found they end up with health issues when chlorine levels are high.
We install water filtration systems made by Puretec and we are happy to provide you with a quote to have one of these installed in your existing home or your building project – just get in touch.
